Following the success of his portrait series, "Magic in the kitchen" which showed us chefs in Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and the United States, Jan Bartelsman now strives to lift this series to a higher plan with the addition of video and animation. "I love experimenting. By adding movement in photography, you can give your image extra depth," says Jan. For this series he was inspired by Surrealism, the passion of chefs and the splendor of ingredients.

When photographing restaurant dishes, Jan Bartelsman is quick to know precisely what lighting techniques will best showcase the dishes and to rearrange ingredients/products to give structure to a photographic composition. Many books featuring Jan Bartelsman’s photography have been published and he works for the Dutch 3*** chef Jonnie Boer.
